Understanding Google PageRank

January 16th, 2010

If you own an online business or know a thing or two about search engines, you’ve probably heard of Google PageRank. PageRank is only one of numerous methods Google uses to determine a web page’s relevance or importance. In terms of traditional understanding, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks not only at the sheer volume of votes; among 100 other aspects it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. However, these aspects don’t count when PageRank is calculated.

PageRank is based on incoming links, but not just on the number of them – relevance and quality are important as well (in terms of the PageRank of sites, which link to a given site). As you may already know, exchanging links with other webmasters or website owners has been a traditional and most common way of collecting backlinks or “votes” for your web site. Webmasters exchange links to improve traffic through numerous inbound links or link popularity programs. Exchanging links is usually a free process (unless you choose a fee-based link exchange program), making link exchanges cost effective. Link exchange is the key to improve your ranking in organic search results and that’s why it is one of the most cost effective methods of generating relevant traffic.

Understanding DOCTYPE Declaration

January 16th, 2010

The DOCTYPE declaration should be the very first thing in any HTML document, before you insert your tag. It is important to remember that DOCTYPE declaration is not an HTML tag; it is an instruction to the web browser about what version of the markup language your web page is written in.

By using a certain DOCTYPE (strict or transitional) you claim to have correctly implemented a certain (X)HTML flavor:

< !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"     "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

There are various DOCTYPE that you can use with your code. Following list is a quick summary of commonly used DOCTYPE declarations.

Working With Web Colors

January 16th, 2010

There is more to web design than developing animated or flash heavy “cool” web sites. Good web designers are not looking to slap their own agenda on their customers’ web sites. Good web designers do pretty much everything well but the one thing they do exceptionally well is to listen to their clients. After all, it is their money that is funding the work so it is just common sense to deliver a product that meets their expectations and future goals.

In this article, I am going to talk about some very minute details that are often overlooked but they have far reaching impact on the final outcome.

Working With Web Colors:
You may have noticed that a web page sometime changes colors when viewed on different machines. Why does this happen? It’s because different platforms use different color palettes. Both Macs and PCs have 256 colors in their system palettes, but only 216 of them are the exactly the same colors. In the past, most people did think much about Mac browsers since majority of browsers and machines were Windows based. However, in today’s world, you can’t afford to ignore any segment of your market no matter how small it maybe.

The 216 web colors are in the form of 00 33 66 99 CC FF.

The numbers that are put together like the example above are called “Hexadecimal Colors” (Hexa=6). You cannot select these numbers from your system palette, but you can specify RGB value in your system palette. RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue (Primary colors). These numbers are used to convert RGB values to Hexadecimal values.

Remember not every color is going to look bad when browser forces it. Most of them will still be close to what you originally designed but some of them will look outright ugly. As a good designer these things should always be at the back of your mind when working with web colors.
